One common instruction given for walkers is “swing your arms.” This is a less than ideal instruction; a better instruction is “turn your shoulders and chest side to side in rhythm with each step.” This kind of instruction leads to the undulating movements of the saunter, an attractive movement pattern typical of Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly. Find someone who has the same size foot you do and compare your feet. Chances are you’ll find you have longer or shorter toes, a greater or lesser distance from the heel to the ball of the foot. If you both wear the same shoe, someone is going to have foot problems, if they don’t already. This puts a lot of strain on the leg muscles (especially the calf muscles), causing aching legs and shin splints. Also, the twisting of the lower leg displaces the patella (knee cap). Proper rest and elevation of the feet, as much as possible, can help to alleviate some foot pain and swelling. Foot soaks, both warm and cold, several times a week may also be a helpful way to control some foot pain and aches. The muscles, tendons and ligaments of your feet can degenerate and lead to flatfeet as you age. Untreated flatfeet may cause secondary problems such as overpronation, poor ankle alignment, altered running mechanics and ultimately ankle pain and injury.
